Toasted drives and other joys

This morning my boot drive developed a click of death. No worky, no booty. I was sad most of the day, until my friend Tony told me about the freezer trick.

What he told me was that sometimes if you develop what appears to be a head crash, you can take your drive, put it in a zip-loc, then shove it into the freezer for about 10 minutes. Take it out, hook it up and it may boot.

What do you know, it worked. Let me boot up to transfer files to my secondary drive. Bad news is the transfer warmed up the drive to the point where whatever cooling goodness the fridge gave it was quickly overcome by the badness of motor heat.

So, my solution: freeze it again, then put vegetables on the drive.

What you see above is my computer with the boot drive to the side on, under and surrounded by frozen corn, green beans and peas. I'm actually posting this with this setup. How's that for your cooling solutions?

Also, in the frantic dash to find all the files I truly want to save, I discovered this little conversational gem between me and a buddy from many years ago. We were simultaneously watching the Star Wars Holiday Special and IM-ing one another as the horror progressed before our eyes. Consider this a rough synopsis of that particular blight on our culture.

First off, it's pretty cool that the futuristic world as portrayed by Nicolas Cage and John Travolta in Face/Off (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119094/) is finally coming to pass.

Second, this new technology provides for a wonderful plethora of double entendres and plays on words; something which pleases me greatly.

This medical advance is a complete about face. All those disfigured musicians will finally face the music.And what's more, you can take the whole thing at face value... even though patients are destined to be facetious.

Last week I got a letter from SBC, my phone company. Actually, not so much a letter, tearing off the ends revealed it to be only a check -- for $51.84.

Today I got another such mailing from them, this time for $71.53. What the hell? No explanatory text or anything... except for cryptic text on the non-check part in the form of a line item regarding a refund. I have no idea what this is all about.

My friend Adam hooked me up with a friends and family account at Pandora several days ago. I've been rockin' it off and on, and must say I really like it a lot. It's been spot on for my musical tastes given the songs I provide as seeds. As well, I've discovered some really good bands through use of the service.

However

Every single station I've created has included Blue Monday by New Order. My coworker Andy suggests that perhaps Blue Monday is the Kevin Bacon of music. I think this is true.
