Toasted drives and other joys

This morning my boot drive developed a click of death. No worky, no booty. I was sad most of the day, until my friend Tony told me about the freezer trick.

What he told me was that sometimes if you develop what appears to be a head crash, you can take your drive, put it in a zip-loc, then shove it into the freezer for about 10 minutes. Take it out, hook it up and it may boot.

What do you know, it worked. Let me boot up to transfer files to my secondary drive. Bad news is the transfer warmed up the drive to the point where whatever cooling goodness the fridge gave it was quickly overcome by the badness of motor heat.

So, my solution: freeze it again, then put vegetables on the drive.

What you see above is my computer with the boot drive to the side on, under and surrounded by frozen corn, green beans and peas. I'm actually posting this with this setup. How's that for your cooling solutions?

Also, in the frantic dash to find all the files I truly want to save, I discovered this little conversational gem between me and a buddy from many years ago. We were simultaneously watching the Star Wars Holiday Special and IM-ing one another as the horror progressed before our eyes. Consider this a rough synopsis of that particular blight on our culture.

---

Reflex: I think Brian M has a better rendition than
	        this real media file.

It's sort of hard to see.

Even so, you can REALLY tell they're wearing
                way too much makeup

DrKlahn: awesome.

DrKlahn: itchy?

DrKlahn: LUMPY!

DrKlahn: FUCKING ART CARNIE!

Reflex: I'm not sure if I'm crying or if my eyes are
           	streaming blood

DrKlahn: JEFFERSON STARSHIP!

DrKlahn: THIS IS AMAZING!

Reflex: Words can't describe the sheer pain I am
		experiencing

DrKlahn: this is so incredible.

Reflex: I can't believe I wasted bandwidth on this

DrKlahn: heh

Reflex: THERE IS NO FUCKING DIALOG WHATSOEVER

DrKlahn: I know! Are they playing with Star Wars toys?

OH MY FUCKING GOD! The whole thing is in
                Wookie!

Reflex: Did you ever read that really amazingly bitter
and sarcastic review of this? The guy was
talking about there being a long portion of
watching wookies grunting at each other.

OH MY GOD HOW UNFORTUNATELY RIGHT HE IS

DrKlahn: I can't believe someone actually shat this
                thing out.

Reflex: I swear to God I've watched 10 minutes of this
and have not heard anything intelligible after
                the opening credits

Reflex: There is a holographic dance number

DrKlahn: yeah, I'm about five minutes in. Lumpy seems
to be walking on the railing of the house for
                some reason.

Reflex: that's what wookies do, I guess

DrKlahn: shit

Reflex: I have absolutely no sympathy for the wookies'
		plight

Reflex: Oh no.

                Mark Hammil

DrKlahn: what plight? WHAT FUCKING PLIGHT?

DrKlahn: *sigh*

Reflex: I don't know, they all seem sort of sad,
though I can't understand what the fuck
they're saying, so they could be orgasming for
                all I know

DrKlahn: yes

Reflex: WHY FOR THE LOVE OF GOD IS HE WEARING HIS
		FLIGHT SUIT???

DrKlahn: oh god. the holographic dance scene is
                incredible

Reflex: This is making me actually moan in displeasure

DrKlahn: the wookies are fascinated by the holographic
		circus.

Reflex: it is their god

DrKlahn: ha!

Reflex: wait until you hear mark

DrKlahn: awesome

DrKlahn: why are they so sad?

Reflex: the wookies?

DrKlahn: FUCK! Mark Hammil!

DrKlahn: yes.

                Jesus.

Reflex: I'd rather not

DrKlahn: he's dressed for a raid on the death star.

Reflex: This is actually making me physically tired.

DrKlahn: it is quite fatiguing.

Reflex: I don't know that I can watch another hour of
		this

DrKlahn: god, I know I can't.

Harvery Korman as Julia Childs preparing
bantha loins is more than I can take.

Reflex: oh wait

                grandpa wookie is watching porn

DrKlahn: HA! YES!

Reflex: this is profoundly disturbing

Reflex: of course, maybe i'm just recalling that star
wars fanfic in which they describe wookiee
penises as 14" barbed phalli of swelling pain

DrKlahn: gah

Reflex: which knot, much like a dog's

Reflex: ugh.

I'm going to go to bed

this has made me somehow despondent

Reflex: I'm going to have to come back to this one.

DrKlahn: yeah...

		sleep well.

Sweet medical tech

http://www.cnn.com/2005/HEALTH/09/17/face.transplant.ap/index.html

First off, it's pretty cool that the futuristic world as portrayed by Nicolas Cage and John Travolta in Face/Off (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119094/) is finally coming to pass.

Second, this new technology provides for a wonderful plethora of double entendres and plays on words; something which pleases me greatly.

This medical advance is a complete about face. All those disfigured musicians will finally face the music. And what's more, you can take the whole thing at face value... even though patients are destined to be facetious.

That last one was a stretch, sorry

Last week I got a letter from SBC, my phone company. Actually, not so much a letter, tearing off the ends revealed it to be only a check -- for $51.84.

Today I got another such mailing from them, this time for $71.53. What the hell? No explanatory text or anything... except for cryptic text on the non-check part in the form of a line item regarding a refund. I have no idea what this is all about.

Any ideas, anyone?

Pandora's Box contains a lot of New Order, interestingly enough

My friend Adam hooked me up with a friends and family account at Pandora several days ago. I've been rockin' it off and on, and must say I really like it a lot. It's been spot on for my musical tastes given the songs I provide as seeds. As well, I've discovered some really good bands through use of the service.

However

Every single station I've created has included Blue Monday by New Order. My coworker Andy suggests that perhaps Blue Monday is the Kevin Bacon of music. I think this is true.

Somehow my Brita pitcher developed a growth of algae. What's worse is I don't know how long it's been like that, I only noticed because I let it run low and what I thought was green from the counter top was actually green from the water.

Ick.

Still like the potty humor

Graduating seniors give "high school memories" to be read by teachers when the students receive their diplomas. One says some nice things about Mike Hawk.

http://www.big-boys.com/articles/mikehawk.html

So juvenile, yet I laugh so.

A sudden realization

I have a buttload of compact discs. Just organized my music collection, and now I'm looking around the office at all the game CDs, blanks, and burned discs... I estimate that I have somewhere around a thousand compact discs in my apartment.

I'm willing to extend this obvservation to a view of our culture... It's crazy how ubiquitous they are.

These (nursery) rhymes from around the world are wonderful to read and extremely valuable in understanding other cultures.

I was unaware that in Ireland a pacifier may be referred to as a "dummy tit". This pleases me.
